Fourth-Grade Little Leaguer

Brian's at the ballfield
Played catcher last three years
There's parents cheering in the stands
But that's not what he hears

He steps up to the batter's box
The team is down one run
He checks the coach for signals
His mom yells, "Just have fun."

He digs his foot in, checks his hat
Chokes up and crouches low
He sees the ball come off the glove
And this one ain't too slow

He hits a drive right over short
The winning run comes in
And Brian's in his glory
High-five's come rushing in

And just to hear him tell it
To his friends at home today
He's going to the big show soon
Getting rich along the way

He'll be playing for the A's, you see
The Yank's or Card's or Brave's
Stealing bases, homerun king
His card worth more than Dave's

Won't tell him what the odds are
He'll learn that soon enough
His friends will soon stop playing
The coaches will get tough

I'll pray that he keeps dreaming
Don't ever stop my son
'Cause someone has to make it
And you can be the one

You'll be playing for the A's, you see
The Yank's or Card's or Brave's
Stealing bases, homerun king
Your card worth more than Dave's

Your eyes are on the diamond
And no one is more eager
Oh, dreams don't get no bigger
For a fourth-grade little leaguer.
